Josh ‘Jin’ Thompson is a Melbourne-based director, filmmaker, and videographer with a career spanning commercial production, documentary, branded content, TVCs, licensed drone capture, and industrial filmmaking. Practical, technical, and adaptable, he leads projects across the entire creative workflow—from initial strategy, concept development, and scriptwriting through to lighting, camera operation, aerial cinematography and editing.

Jin’s client list includes major brands, agencies and celebrities including Dannii Minogue, directing talent and crews while bringing a strong hands-on technical background in camera, lighting, audio and aerial cinematography.

His work has taken him from high-end studios and live events to active remote locations across Australia.

Grounded in Community, Mentorship & Social Justice

Alongside his filmmaking career, Jin leads projects in remote Northern Territory communities, including Lajamanu and Yuendumu.

Jin is driven by youth justice and community development projects supporting youth through complex social challenges, built deep cross-cultural partnerships.

This deeply influences Jin’s approach to filmmaking today and his ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds.

Independent Projects & Creative Journeys

One of Jin’s earliest major creative projects was The Buskers Guide, born from several years spent travelling through Asia, Africa, and Europe with a camera and musical instruments in tow. The project followed street performers, musicians and local communities encountered along the way, combining travel, music and documentary storytelling.

Working with unpredictable environments and people from diverse cultures became an unconventional filmmaking education in building rapport and trust quickly.

Outside of commercial client work, Jin’s independent projects span documentary filmmaking, podcasts, music, travel-led storytelling. Across every project, Jin bridges high-end visual production with social integrity - to deliver content that is visually striking, ethically grounded and focused on human inspired storytelling.
